Recreational Facilities
Just a short distance outside Richards Landing is Island Springs Golf Resort, a championship 9-hole course. Island Springs offers challenging play amid rolling hills and breathtaking scenery. After a round of golf, enjoy a cool beverage on the verandah or a full course meal in the dining room. The course offers rental clubs, golf carts, and a pro shop.
At the Women's Institute (W.I.) Park you will find a sandy public beach, safe swimming, playground equipment, picnic pavilions and a tennis court.
The St. Joseph Island Marine Park at Stribling Point offers a rustic, natural experience with numerous forest trails. It is also a great place to watch huge tanker ships as they sail upstream to Lake Superior.
The Tranter Memorial Rink on Elizabeth Street operates during the winter months, and offers a well maintained ice surface for hockey and other skating activities. The Rink has a heated changeroom building and a canteen, which is open during organized events.
Just up the street from the Marina, you'll find Cenotaph Park. With huge shade trees, well maintained grass, park benches and picnic tables, you'll have an opportunity to observe the World War I & II cenotaph and gain a new appreciation for the peace that envelops this park and community.
Recreational Programs
The Recreation Department in the Township of St. Joseph works diligently to try and offer new and exciting activities for people of all ages and skill levels. We offer programs throughout the year that encourage a healthy and active lifestyle.
In the Summer months we offer children starting from JK through to grade 12 an exciting two month Baseball league. Starting in the month of May and running through until the end of June, children are taught the fundamentals of baseball and how to be a team player. It is offered to both boys and girls with some opportunity to have a co-ed team if desired. Children are divided into teams based on age, not skill level. Games and practices are scheduled for early evening 1-2 days a week.
We also offer a Soccer league that runs from late June thru until the end of July. This program is available to children under the age of 14. Again, teams are made based on age, not skill level, and games and practices happen in the early evening 1-2 days a week.
Throughout the summer, Certified Yoga Instructor, Mary McCrae offers a Yoga class for people of all ages and skill levels. There is no experience necessary, and it runs by donation. The drop-in classes are every Tuesday in the Old Town Hall building at 6:30pm.
The annual St. Joseph Island Triathlon is always set to take place in August. Events include: Olympic Triathlon, International Duathlon, Sprint Triathlon and Duathlon, Try-a-Triathlon, and the Kids of Steel. For more information, visit stjosephislandtriathlon.com.
Mountain Biking and Cycling are also a great thing to do in the summer. With the Island's numerous groomed trails and areas to explore, you are sure to enjoy the natural beauty of our Island's forests.
Starting in the Fall and running (or walking) until the end of Spring, the Nordic Walking Group are all about exploring the Island on foot. They meet every Saturday morning at 10am at the Tranter Memorial Rink. It is free and it's a great way to meet people in the community and stay active throughout the winter months.
In the Winter the recreation department offers the community a nicely maintained Outdoor Skating Rink. The recreation department uses this site for skating lessons and our various Hockey programs. It is also available to the community for shinny and other recreational skating activities.

St. Joseph Island's nicely groomed trails, located in Jocelyn Township, are also ideal for Cross-Country Skiing.
Our Goals
The Township of St. Joseph Recreation Department aims to provide the community with exciting and fun activities that can be enjoyed by all. No matter what skill level you have and how old you are, we're here to aid you in the development of a healthy and active lifestyle.
Universal - Provide activities for people of all ages and skill levels, and encourage the entire community to get active.
Affordable - Maintain a low registration cost so that everyone has the ability to participate.
Accessible - Provide activities to the community that interests them, and are only minutes away from their home.
Volunteers!
The Recreation programs that we provide are dependent on volunteers. Our voluntary staff works hard to make these programs available to the community. They are always open to new ideas for programs and could always use a helping hand. We are always looking for coaches, referees, umpires and instructors for current and new programs. If you have a desire to get involved with the Recreation Department, please contact the municipal office.
